Guess Games For All Levels (added new videos on April 9, 2018)

Hi there!

Today I would like to talk to you about guess games......

Guess games are great for reviewing target language or as filler games.
They usually don’t require much preparation but yield good results, since the students are either speaking English (guessing) or listening to English. (it’s a win-win situation)

Guess games can be done as a whole class activity or with smaller groups. The student who guesses correctly, gets to decide the next topic/action to be guessed.

Since each action card in LMQ comes in 5 different colors, you can have can have up to 5 groups playing at the same time

Here are some ideas:

Guessing an action using fixed target language : Are you watching TV? Are you reading a book? Are you using a computer? Are you doing homework?
If the students can handle it, change the target language after several rounds : Do you want to watch TV? Do you want to read a book? etc. (5-10 cards/actions)

Guessing the Action

Guessing the question* : Are you watching TV? Do you want to watch TV? Do you like watching TV? (1-3 cards/actions)

Guessing the Question....

Guessing the verb tense** : Are you watching TV now? Did you watch TV yesterday? Are you going to watch TV tomorrow? (1-3 cards/actions)

Guessing the subject*** : Are you watching TV? Is Tom watching TV? Are Tom and Mary watching TV? (1-3 cards/actions)

* If needed, write the structures (3~5) on the board you want your students to choose from.

** Use the Color Coded Cards that come with LMQ or write the keywords (tomorrow, last week, yesterday, tonight etc) on the board)

***Use the Color Coded Cards that come with LMQ or write the keywords (Tom, the teacher, Mary, your friend etc) on the board.

Just make sure you don’t have too many cards/options to choose from. Even the best game becomes boring if it takes too much time to win...

Experiment and try to adjust the game(s) to your students' needs, there are plenty of ways to do this.

Have fun and till next time!
